A Tribute tothe Creator

The Hindi remake of the movie is inspired by the original Malayalam film of the same name. Jeethu Joseph was the writer and director of the movie. In one scene, when Devgn’s character makes an entry in a hotel register, he signs his name as Jitu Joseph. This was marked as a possible tribute to the filmmaker.

Ajay Devgn in a New Avataar

In the movie, the actor is seen in a completely different light. Devgn is known for playing tough-looking roles where he is beating up goons in action sequences. But in this thriller flick, he has a calm, cool and composed personality. He plays the character, Vijay Salgaonkar, a street smart middle-class family man who runs a cable business in a Goan village. Throughout the movie, Vijay stays pragmatic even in a tense situation to protect his family.

Inspiration

There were some speculations of the movie plotlines being similar to that of a Japanese novel ‘The Devotion of Suspect X by KeigoHigashino’. Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms acquired the rights of this novel in India and sent a legal notice to the makers of the Malayalam movie. The novel was more like a master class in the art of deception. However, Jeethu Joseph denied the similarities between the film and the Japanese thriller novel.

Star Cast

Drishyam is Ishita’s Bollywood debut film where she plays Devgn’s adopted daughter, Anju, a class twelve student. Shriya plays the role of Anju’s mother Nandini. But the surprising part is that the actress is just 8 years older than Ishita in real life.  Also, Ishita is the sister of the Bollywood actress Tanushree Dutta.

Influence of Cinema

In the movie, Salgaonkar spends nights in his office binging on films. Whether it is an Akshay Kumar or Amitabh Bachchan’s movie, he would watch every scene of it. Salgaonkar gets so influenced by films, that he starts using tactics from movies to solve his real-life problems. This exact portrayal shows the magic of cinema, and the influence it has on its audience.
